STS 125 - Foundations of Public Health

Semester Offered: Fall
1 unit(s)
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to public health’s core principles, structures, and functions. Students explore the Ten Essential Public Health Services that shape public health practice in assessment, policy development, and assurance. We examine the organization of public health at local, state, national, and global levels, evaluating the roles of governmental and non-governmental entities and the influence of public health policy on population health. Fundamental public health methods, including epidemiology and qualitative research, are reviewed to demonstrate how data drives decision-making and informs interventions. Additionally, we analyze the social and behavioral determinants of health, investigating how factors such as socioeconomic status, culture, and health behaviors impact health outcomes. Through case studies and discussion students build a strong foundation in public health.  Christie Van Horne.

Two 75-minute periods.
