HIST 205 - Vecinos Poughkeepsie Semester Offered: Fall 1 unit(s) (Same as LALS 205 ) This intensive allows students to gain hands-on experience with Spanish language oral history by participating in “Somos Vecinos,” a project that creates space for Latin American people in Poughkeepsie to share experiences, memories, and ideas by recounting life stories. It explores how vital they are to the city and its neighboring communities. The intensive invites students as well as others to engage with the beauty, depth, and complexity of Poughkeepsie’s Latin American community by preserving and listening to these stories. Students contribute to the ”Somos Vecinos” project by conducting interviews, editing audio recordings, transcribing, translating, and uploading these products to a digital platform for public access. Given that Spanish is the primary language for interviews, advanced Spanish competency or near native fluency is required. Daniel Mendiola.
