HISP 228 - Modern Spain Semester Offered: Spring 1 unit(s) Topic for 2025/26a: Identity, Conflict, and Change. This course offers an interdisciplinary survey of modern Spain from the early 18th century to the present. Through literature, film, art, and historical documents, we explore key moments that shaped Spain’s complex modern identity, including the decline of empire, the Spanish Enlightenment, civil war, dictatorship, and democratic transition. Special attention is given to issues of regionalism, memory, social class, gender, and immigration. Taught in Spanish, this course emphasizes critical reading, writing, and discussion skills. Prerequisite(s): HISP 216 or HISP 219 or permission of the instructor.
