PHIL 254 - Decolonial Feminisms

(Same as WFQS 254 )  What is the relationship between gender and colonialism? This course begins by looking at how colonial projects involved constructions of gendered binaries and heterosexuality on non-European cultures. We then look at continued relationships of coloniality and critiques of Western feminism, while introducing students to Africana, Third World, Indigenous, and Latinx feminist philosophers and taking up questions about decolonial futures and the possibilities of solidarity. We read Mariana Ortega, Maria Lugones, Nkiru Nzegwu, Oyèrónké Oyêwùmí, and Gayatri Spivak among others.  Shivani Radhakrishnan.

Prerequisite(s): One course in Philosophy or Women’s or Feminist & Queer Studies or permission of the instructor.

Two 75-minute periods.
